- York was set to be the meeting place of Queen Elizabeth I and Mary,
Queen of Scots but the meeting would never take place.
- York Minster is the only Cathedral to have its own police force, initiated
after the fire of 1829.
- The city walls are three miles long and are the best preserved in
England.
- The only street in York to be mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086
was the Shambles.
- The oldest surviving row of houses in York is Lady Row on Goodramgate,
which was built in 1316.
- The half-timbered building next to the Golden Fleece on Pavement once
belonged to Sir Thomas Herbert, friend of Charles I who kept him company
the night before his execution.
- The observatory in Museum Gardens once housed the largest refracting
telescope in the world.
- The Yorkshire Museum was designed by William Wilkins who also designed
the National Gallery in London.
- Anne Boleyn is said to haunt the corridors of King’s Manor.
She came to York shortly after her marriage to Henry VIII.
- Dame Judi Dench began her acting career treading the boards at the
Theatre Royal in York.
